How to Wash a Yoga Towel (Without Ruining the Grip)
Share
Your yoga towel goes through a lot. Think about it: pressed against hot, wet skin for 60–90 minutes at a time, absorbing sweat from every sun salutation, every warrior hold, every shavasana you’ve earned. If you want it to keep performing — and keep that grip that makes it worth owning in the first place — you need to wash it right.
The good news: it’s not complicated. The bad news: most people do at least one thing wrong, and that one thing is exactly what degrades grip over time.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Why Washing Matters (and Why Wrong Washing Destroys Grip)
Yoga towels — especially premium microfiber ones — work through a combination of fiber structure and surface texture. When you sweat, those microscopic fibers activate and create friction against your hands and feet. That’s the grip.
Here’s what kills it:
- Fabric softener — This is the #1 grip killer. Fabric softener coats the microfiber strands with a waxy film that prevents moisture from activating the fibers. One wash with softener can significantly reduce grip. Two or three, and you’ve basically turned your towel into a slip hazard.
- Dryer sheets — Same problem, different delivery mechanism. That “softness” smell is a polysiloxane coating on your fibers.
- Hot dryer cycles — High heat degrades the polyester-polyamide blends in microfiber over time. It won’t destroy your towel in one cycle, but repeated high heat washes will shorten its life.
- Dirty machines — Washing your towel with heavily soiled laundry transfers oils and residue that clog microfibers. Wash with similar athletic or light items.
The Right Way to Wash a Yoga Towel
Step 1: Shake it out first
After practice, give your towel a shake outdoors or in a ventilated space. This removes loose debris and lets it begin drying. Don’t ball it up wet — that’s how mildew starts.
Step 2: Wash cold or warm (never hot)
Cold water (30°C / 86°F) or warm water (40°C / 104°F) is ideal for microfiber. Hot water causes fibers to break down faster and can cause color bleeding on printed designs.
For DripYin towels with sublimated artwork — Fire, Water, Earth, Air — cold wash preserves the vibrancy of the mandala printing long-term. This isn’t just care advice; it’s color protection.
Step 3: Use a gentle, fragrance-free detergent
Less is more. A small amount of gentle, fragrance-free detergent is ideal. Sport-specific detergents (like Hex, WIN, or Nikwax) are designed for synthetic athletic fabrics and work particularly well.
What to avoid:
- Fabric softener (ever)
- Dryer sheets (ever)
- Bleach (except on white towels as a last resort — it damages color)
- Heavy, perfumed detergents (residue builds up)
Step 4: Gentle cycle or hand wash
Use a gentle or delicate cycle. High-agitation cycles can cause microfiber to pill or snag, especially on decorative weaves. If you hand wash, soak for 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly.
Step 5: Air dry or low heat only
Air drying is best — hang your towel over a shower bar, drying rack, or clothesline. It typically dries in 2–4 hours depending on thickness and airflow.
If you need to use a dryer: low heat only, and pull it out before it’s fully dry. Let it finish air-drying. Never over-dry microfiber.
How Often Should You Wash It?
After every practice. Or at minimum, after every sweaty practice.
This isn’t just about hygiene — though it is that. It’s about performance. A towel that’s been used twice without washing will start to accumulate skin oils, body lotion residue, and bacteria that degrade the fiber surface. Over time, this makes it less grippy, not more.
The grip you feel in a fresh towel is the grip it was designed to have. Maintaining that means washing it regularly.
What About That “Yoga Towel Break-In Period”?
Some people swear their yoga towel grips better after a few washes. There’s something to this. New microfiber towels sometimes have a manufacturing finish that washes out over the first 1–2 cycles, revealing the full texture of the fiber underneath. After that, the grip peaks.
This is why we often recommend:
- Wash before first use
- Get it damp before practice (light mist from a spray bottle)
- Know it gets better with use — not worse
Storing Your Yoga Towel
Don’t stuff it in a gym bag wet. Seriously. Wet microfiber in an enclosed space = mildew within hours.
Best practices:
- Hang immediately after practice if you can
- Pack dry, unroll at home if you’re commuting from the studio
- Fold loosely — don’t compact wet fabric against itself
- Store in a breathable bag if you must pack it wet for transport
Troubleshooting: When Your Towel Loses Grip
If you’ve noticed reduced grip, it’s usually one of three things:
1. Fabric softener contamination
Strip wash: run a cycle with just hot water and a small amount of white vinegar (no detergent). Then a second cycle with just hot water. This can partially restore fibers by dissolving the waxy coating. Note: hot water only for this process, not regular care.
2. Oil buildup from skin or lotion
Sport detergent with a degreasing action (Hex Sport or similar) + extra rinse cycle. If you apply lotion before practice, give it more time to absorb — or wash it off before class.
3. Wear and age
Eventually, microfiber degrades. If your towel is over 2 years old with heavy use, the fibers have physically worn. At that point, it’s time for a new one.

DripYin Towel Care
All four DripYin element towels — Fire, Water, Earth, and Air — are made from premium sublimation-printed microfiber designed for hot yoga performance.
The mandala and astrology artwork is sublimation-fused into the fibers — not printed on top — so it won’t crack or peel. But the grip depends on the microfiber surface staying clean and uncoated. Follow the care guide above and your towel will perform at its peak, session after session.
Treat it right and it’ll take you through thousands of practices. Neglect it (or hit it with fabric softener once) and you’ll feel the difference on your next warrior three.
The practice demands the gear. The gear demands the care.
